Dad used to talk about 'putting in a tender' to get a contract.

To a little boy who only knew abut the coal- carrying 'tenders' of stream trains, 'machine tenders' who attended to factory machinery, or 'tender feelings' towards another person this one was a bit of a puzzler.

I also learned that the lowest tender' didn't automatically get the job, and that a higher price from a reliable man with a proven track record would often win out against 'total bloody cowboys'.

Dad never cut costs to the bone just to get work, and also explained the benefits of allowing a bit extra - both money and time - for 'unexpected contingencies'.

My father spent three years on a destroyer tender during WWII. Boy, he had some stories. Mostly ones that made me never want to live on a destroyer tender.
