I take it there isn't much interest in a prose competition...

Flash fiction challenge? Or Short story challenge? They've got those running over at the other place, so I don't see why we can't have them here.

And how about a writing prompt of the day? I'm always looking for writing prompts that inspire me.

Life is full of them without asking others to provide them, except unwittingly ;-)  One of the best is the 'What if?' game.

Look at an everyday object, or situation, or saying, turn it on its head, and ask yourself 'What if...'

Example:  People say the Queen has no real powers, she's 'just a puppet'.  What if they're right?  What if she truly is a life sized simulacrum?  I'm sure a lot of her duties could be carried out by such a creation.

What if a hacker accessed her controls and played havoc with them?  Or a chip became defective without any deliberate sabotage?  A sudden and seemingly spontaneous break dance part way through The Queen's Speech?

Or telling the leader of the successful party in the general election,  "No, sorry.  I'm not just a rubber stamp.  I declare you are all a bunch of incompetent twats and therefore I do not agree to you forming a new government.  Come back when you have some more credible candidates."

Or perhaps smacking a visiting head of state over the head with her handbag and telling him to "Fuck Right Orf!  And take your horrible little ginger wig with you."

Other less dramatic 'what ifs' can provide far more usable ideas.

I believe it was in Alice in Wonderland where someone said 'Believe at least three impossible things before breakfast."  Maybe not before breakfast, but I'm sure every writer could manage three impossible thoughts every day, and it only needs one good one to trigger a new short story or novel.  (Finishing it is another thing, but you can't finish anything without starting it first.)

I'd love to see that happen.  :D
