hum  (I was once told that a hive hums when it's queen-right.  I have no idea if I was told correctly.)

When you're far enough away from it motorway noises merge into a fairly steady hum.  The volume changes according to traffic flow, but it's an even sound.  If you're too close, or on a very still night, the individual car and other vehicle noises vie for your attention like a room full of noisy kids, all with individual voices..

mizzen  (I know, I'm at it again.  The mizzen is the aftermost of a ship's three masts, and the driver is the fore-and-aft sail carried on it, a massive help in keeping to windward and tacking.  Without a driver, a square rigged ship must go in the same direction as the wind.)
