inefficient

Dad always said Royal Navy Stokers hated it when ships sometimes burned the relatively inefficient lignite (brown coal) in their boilers.  He said it took far more shovelling than it was worth, and it was 'always a bugger to keep a thin hot fire-bed burning under 'the tubes'.

Sometimes an odd chunk of the stuff turned up in our domestic coal and he'd quietly cuss about it when he found it in our caravan's coal scuttle.

He didn't serve on many coal-burning ships, but they were a key part of learning the trade.
