Good morning. Anyone doing any holiday baking? I'm diving in today when my 8 year old helper comes over.

Once I got diagnosed with too high an A1C, I gave up on baking things I can't eat. I did buy some (very few) cookies for a plate to celebrate.

Do you have a favorite cookie recipe? I always cooked several different kinds. And made chocolates, too.

I baked some lovely shortbread cookies today. They truly melt in your mouth. I also tried a cinnamon roll cookie which is delicious. I'll have to add both to the annual rotation. IN both cases, I baked a batch and froze the rest of the dough for when future Laura's sweet tooth kicks in.

So, what do you make for the holidays, Spell?

I used to make all sorts of cookies. Kefli, sugar cookies, mint and chocolate cookies, cherry and vanilla cookies, Russian tea cakes, and one of my favorites had candied cherries, candied pineapple, dates, hazelnuts, pecans, walnuts, chocolate chips, and a cinnamon flavored dough holding it all together. Some years I made meranguines and some years I made nut rolls. I had this pie crust type cookie with a special frosting that made them into little bite sized sandwiches that just melted in your mouth. I made hundreds and hundreds of cookies and gave away tins to friends and neighbors. I baked for a solid week and then we had cookies here that lasted until Valentine's Day.

Doesn't that all sound delicious?

I may well make some wholemeal shortbread for the handful of visitors I expect to see over Christmas.  Shortbread is good because it can either be plain, or carry something else like chocolate chips or fruit.  it can be baked as smallish biscuits or cut into thick fingers.  Or the biscuits can be half dipped in chocolate.  There are other biscuit mixes, but shortbread is my go-to choice for the job.

For myself I shall probably make a large scone round, wholemeal again, with sultanas, which will cut into eight wedges.  Even one of these wedges is quite substantial ;-)

I feel no urge to make or even decorate a Christmas cake.  I made hundreds of these in my working life as a baker, and always had to resist the temptation to pipe a little pile of droppings underneath the plastic bloody reindeer.

Forgot to mention that I also made Gingerbread bagels this past weekend. I'm not a huge fan of gingerbread, but these were subtle.

Gyppo, did you forget to ask a question in your last post?

He may have. But as many mistakes as I have been making recently, who am I to say anything?

Indeed I did.

Shameless wretch, aren't I?

I was in a Zoom meeting with a bunch of old farts (not my sisters) and there was a woman who simply did not give anyone else in our small group a chance to talk. She just went on and on and on. It wasn't even ME! It was some other old lady.

Can you believe the nerve?

Is she the one who got the brains in your family?

That was mean. My other options were looks, style, manners, etc.
You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch.

That's a vague question to put out to the general public.

I'm not always the smartest "she" in the family but I'm certainly not the dumbest. I hit the top smart mark when I'm being a smartass. I can crack us up sometimes.

When you were a kid, what was the worst smartass thing you ever said to a teacher, parent, aunt, uncle, grandparent, or another significant adult in your life? Did you expect to be punished?

My father, an alcoholic, didn't want coats laid on the back of the couch/sofa/davenport/that piece of furniture which did not bother my mother at all. He had a little sign maker machine and was making a sign that said, "Help your mother. Hang up your coats." I was a smartass teenager and looked him right in the eye and said, "If you want to help Mom, stop drinking."

I did not run fast enough to get my bedroom door locked. I got a swift kick in the literal ass and then he stormed out. Not as bad as it might have been. And I got to say it, so it was totally worth it. He did NOT stop drinking and we did not hang up our coats.

Do you have a smartass teenage story?
Imperfect Reason My thoughts, such as they are.

Laura

I prefer not to talk about those teenage years. Does that make you curious?
