Royal Navy slang for cocoa. Generally made with dark unsweetened chocolate. (Strong enough to stand a spoon up in it, according to legend.)
(I checked the spelling and was fascinated to learn that this term, and many others I learned from my Dad, is still in use. Some have changed a little but are still recognisable. Such as 'barracks stanchion', which Dad used as 'dockyard stanchion', a derogatory term for any shore-based sailor who somehow always managed to avoid seagoing duties. The kind of man who 'Spent his entire twelve fannying around the docks at Pompey carrying a clipboard, never once set foot on the oggin, Son.')

Carbon tetrachloride (CTC) was superb stain removing product, but the fumes were deadly. I'm off now to see if I can find Royal Navy song about the unfortunate side effects.
Found it! I learned this song when I was about fourteen. Dad loved it.

I considered this carefully. The hyphen I mean. I concluded that as mumbo is not a word itself then mumbo-jumbo cannot be 2 words. And mumbo-jumbo is clearly not 3 or more words, therefore it must "a" word.

I agree with your logic regarding mumbo-jumbo. (A former editor of the Oxford English Dictionary once said, 'If you take hyphens too seriously you will undoubtedly go mad.')

Cobblestones can be a bugger when they're wet. I found this out when trying to run up the famous Gold Hill, in Shaftesbury, Dorest, many years ago when my Uncle came over from Canada. He was recovering from a kidney op, but dared me to run up the cobbles. Crocked a knee and limped for the rest of the day. (Twisted as well as impact.) Hurt like hell. We live and learn ;-)

Nock - I've heard it used in movies depicting war when archery held the silver bullet.
Kick - as is experienced with most lethal weaponry.

I like this word simply because it looks as if it shouldn't be a real word. More like a Captcha, or collection of random scrabble letters thrown down and aligned with a flat stare defying everyone to challenge its existence. Then, if they do, "It's a female Abyssinian long-haired goat in the mid third of its pregancy. Surely everyone knows this?")
Even spasmodic looks more like a real word.)

For the kids, the game called word chain is very useful to learn and blend segments and manipulate the phonemes. The basic rules are that each player chooses a category on which to name words. The first player speaks after the category has been created. If the category is cities in the United States, for example, the first person may respond with "Los Angeles." The second man must start a new city's name with the same letter as the first, for example, "Seattle." The game will continue until one of the players is stuck and unable to continue the chain (for example, if the next player is unable to come up with a city that begins with "E"). Players can play for as many points as they like up to a predefined limit.
Just play the game, Patrick. Most of us know the rules.

=====
I remember being fascinated by this word when I first encountered it. A lengthy three syllable word to describe a spin ;-) Being able to spell both pirouette and silhouette helped me score sixty out of sixty in a school spelling test at junior school. I knew silhouette from a book about aircraft recognition ;-)
This test result really pissed off the nasty headmaster who couldn't get his arse-licking head and blind prejudices head around the fact that 'the son of a man who works with a shovel had scored perfectly, well ahead of his favoured pupils with richer and therefore - by his reckoning - 'better' parents.
This was the same man who told my parents the best they could expect for me was that I'd become a dustbin man. After that parent's evening they both finally accepted my oft expressed statement that the man didn't like me.
I could write a book about that man, but he doesn't deserve it ;-)
===
You think you had problems? I got marked down for copying from a textbook when I'd done nothing of the kind. If I'd thought a bit quicker I'd have challenged him to find the textbook I'd copied from; but you don't when you're nine years old. Can't remember what the question was, but the answer involved the fairy tern.

There's an interesting preconception about fibreglass (ie 'plastic') yachts. They're actually very tough. What tends to be less robust is the kind of sailor who buys a plastic yacht because he doesn't want to be bothered with maintenance. I've had both. I love wooden boats - but they're not a cheap date.
gobstopper
As any disappointed child knows, an everlasting 'gobstopper' isn't. The real monsters may take a day or more to finish, but they certainly don't last forever.

Re fibreglass, in boats or whatever. Good fibreglass is amazing stuff. Even the thin-walled tubes used for fishing rods. Provided it's been made properly and doesn't delaminate.
My brother-in-law, who often lives his life according to tide tables rather than the clock is rather fond of the statement that owning a boat is 'a bit like owning a hole in the water lined with money'.

Wen we did the arena combat shows the melee was the final fight, when everybody took to the field and apparent chaos reigned, until there was only one man - sometimes woman - standing. Paradoxically this was the time when 'loose dogs or small children' were most likely to run under the rope barrier and create havoc. Or the occasional drunk staggering across from a County Show Beer Tent, who seemed to think "Everybody in!" was an open invitation.

Jo, I hear widdershins quite often, having Witches in the family. It's not an everyday word, but...
Mum used to tell me off for beating eggs 'widdershins' when I was using my left hand to give my right a rest. I believe most bakers/cooks change hands when it starts to ache. If not, they should. It's difficult to beat clockwise with the left hand. I've done it often enough to know you can't un-beat an egg or a cake mix ;-)

(Did you know that both 'havoc' and 'chaos' were used as instructions/orders on the medieval battlefield. As Shakespeare wrote, "Cry Havoc and let loose the dogs of war."
They were an order to take no prisoners, to kill without mercy. There was a great medieval tradition of capturing the individual enemy and holding him to ransom if he was wealthy enough to make it worthwhile. Part of the whole 'chivalry' business. A relatively poor knight could become a wealthy man if he captured a rich one.
Once the 'no mercy' order had been given the enemy wasn't allowed to surrender. King, Prince, Nobleman, or common foot soldier they either fought and won, or became carrion.
The modern equivalent, which isn't exactly an order, is when an Officer tells his sergeant "Prisoners will not be necessary, Sergeant.")

gaff (Either the rig of a boat which has a four-sided rather than triangular mainsail, or the mistake made by the first-time owner who's just bought it.)
Fishing
(There is another type of gaff, a large hook on a stick, which is used to pull large fish from the water. This may be after 'playing' them on rod and line, or perhaps just leaning over the bank at a salmon leap or similar feature which puts them within easy reach. Water bailiffs are automatically - and quite rightly - suspicious of anyone on the riverbank with a longer than usual walking stick or pole, There are numerous ways of arranging a quick-release gaff hook, which will fit in a jacket pocket ;-)

It is difficult with the page changes. With the old version, you could see right below the window in which we type, that the word was different. There is no history stuff showing now, so I keep goofing up. I have no idea what Gyppo's excuse is going to be.

Patti, if you want an excuse, the best I can offer is mental aberration ;-)
Especially seeing as there is a prompt as to which game we're currently playing underneath the previous entry at the bottom of the list. Although I'll admit I didn't see it at first following the update. It looks like this...
â–º Simple word game - new word starts with last letter of previous word.
Now, where were we? Ah yes, Gyppo gathers scattered wits.
Futuristic or satirical? I'll go with the first one.

But the almost instant effectiveness of the epidural was amazing.)

Over the years it gradually grew shorter as the tail sometimes caught fire or got tangled up in powered tools. Stealth
=====
Royal Mail vans are usually bright red, but occasionally they have to hire spares which don't have the livery. They're usually white, with the hire firm's logo on the side.
Here, today, outside my house, is a first. A plain black 'stealth' postal van. I took a picture in case one day, like UFOs, it's existence is officially denied
heritage
I got a reminder of how the other half lives last week. A friend from way back was visiting with her 8-yr-old when my postman arrived - in his grey stealth van, as a matter of fact. As I collected the post, I overheard Mum say to son, "That's how your post comes when you live in the country." So presumably theirs arrives on foot, or possibly by bicycle. Still, a grey van, or even a red one, isn't exactly a space-rocket, is it?

Patti, there's a lot of it about. My ex-mother in-law would have blamed it all on the Sputniks.

My great-grandmother thought you got epilepsy from pork pies. Her GP tried to explain how it was caused by electrical imbalance in the brain, and was probably a result of her not inconsiderable age. When I was at junior school there was a nonsense poem doing the rounds. The wordy types loved it, and the artists drew many representations of it.
The Elephant is a bonny bird,
it flits from bough to bough.
It builds its nest in a rhubarb tree
and whistles like a cow.
As schoolboys the thought of being shat upon by a flying elephant had us in stitches. One of the more artistic girls won fame - or infamy - when she drew a rather effective cartoon of a bewildered man shaking his fist after a retreating Elephant from a huge pile of dung.

The Forrest Hall was storm-beset and sinking in Lynmouth Bay, and while there was a lifeboat stationed there the conditions made it impossible to launch. So they took the decision to launch from Porlock, 13 miles away on the far side of Countisbury Hill. Every horse that could be harnessed, and every man and woman who could push, manouevred that ten-ton boat across land, taking down the parapets of bridges and the corners of buildings so that the carriage could pass. It took eleven hours, but they made it, and all 18 lives were saved.
So from yearning to...

Technically this means being thrown or pushed out through a window, being derived from the French word, fenetre, for the said aperture in a wall.
But it's being bandied about the the media to describe the casting out of Boris Johnson as an MP, although formally he resigned.
Had he truly been flung through a window, ideally without opening it first for a more spectacular effect, that would have made politics briefly far more interesting.

The old Torpoint ferry used to haver a list of rules fastened to the wall on the passenger deck, detailing 'unacceptable behaviour' which would result in you being banned from crossing.
Two things stick in my mind. One was 'attempting to board with any loose sheep or cattle'. So I guess a stud bull or stallion 'walker' with his charge would have been acceptable.
The other was 'riotous behaviour'. The passengers I saw were almost universally lugubrious buggers, a bit like a Wesleyan congregation.

My friend who made armour wore a bright red liripipe at work in his forge. Originally it hung to his waist, and was sometimes used as an impromptu oven glove, or to wipe soot off metal bits.
Occasionally it caught fire, or was snatched from his head by a spinning drill bit, and flailed away at everything within reach. (Great fun to watch from a safe distance.)
Eventually it changed to a somewhat duller red, and lost about a foot off its length.

Strictly speaking, as I understand it, an equerry is specifically an attendant upon a Royal, not a mere knight.
The one who handed the lance to a knight would have been a squire, and his job would have also been to catch up the loose and probably very unsettled horse if his master was tumbled from the saddle in a joust. Returning his lance, or providing an unbroken one, would just be part of his duties.
In 'sporting' jousts, as opposed to mortal combat, the lances were designed to splinter spectacularly as part of the show - but it still took a solid hit to make this happen - and were merely the warm up before using swords, maces, flails, etc.

I'd gone to photograph it opening a new bookshop - not sure what the connection between books and elephants was thought to be - but it was too young and became anxious, and for some reason it latched onto me as a reassuring presence. The keeper begged me to walk back with it to where its trailer had been parked. It was called Cindy, and was six years old. She must now be a matriarch of 58, with hopefully daughters and grand-daughters and even great-grand-daughters. I wonder if she remembers that day in Bangor.)

And a mild speculation... I wonder if Cindy still asks herself if the camera in your other hand was equally anxious and unsettled, and why you were being kind to them both of them.
It just proves my long held belief, things happen to writers which never happen to other folk. What we consider interesting but normal would blow their minds.

Think about it: when you're on the starboard tack, the port side float is being pressed upwards by the water while the starboard float is up in the air being pulled down by gravity. When you tack, the opposite happens. If that isn't a recipe for metal fatigue, or its equivalent in fibreglass and carbon, I don't know what is.)
retreat
(I've never understood the logic behind a trimaran, but those stresses must be amazing.)
(I think it's a combination of spaciousness and stability. But if they matter that much to you, leave sailing to the sailors and book a cruise on an ocean liner. A boat that began life as a trimaran and turned into a catamaran unexpectedly after making one tack too many is no longer as spacious as it used to be, and not very stable either.)

My Uncle Alan, a true polymath who loved music, played several instrument, painted, and could also rip off an excellent story or other piece of writing when it suited him, plus some high level mathematics, was sat 'noodling' at his piano one day.
My Gran called up the stairs, "Are you just playing or are you composing." Seems she'd called him to dinner and he hadn't responded. But she understood how totally absorbed 'creatives' can get at times.
Alan, who was 'unpicking' a tune he wasn't truly happy with, called back "No, I'm decomposing."
Gran, very understanding, and probably more than a little resigned, just put his dinner back in the oven to keep it warm until he returned to the mundane world.

The monstrous three headed dog which guards the gates of hell.
From what, exactly? Who is so desperate to break into hell that it takes a monstrous dog to keep them out?
Janus - the two-faced Roman god of gateways and beginnings.
SLY
Jo: I initially wondered the same. Cerberus, if you dig into the legends/myths was there to keep the denizens from escaping, like a prison guard dog. But he was also there to stop heroes, gods, and other adventurous types from breaking in to try and free others trapped in The Underworld. Maybe this was why he needed three heads, so he could watch in both directions and still have one to bite with.
Some tellings just describe him as multi-headed, but three seems to be the general consensus.
If anyone wanders too deep into the various and very often contradictory legends they won't need a dog to keep them trapped ;-)
It's probable that some of the early storytellers were on magic mushrooms or similar ;-)

I like the legislation passed in New York State, which controlled in some way the keeping of dogs in the city of New York. With no apparent sense of the absurdity, they added the rider: "The same applies to Buffalo."

My neighbour and I were talking briefly about the trials and tribulations of old age. Brought on by another neighbour having been taken off to hospital, again.
"Why did we waste our youth?" she asked.
"I didn't. Some of it may have been used unwisely, but it wasn't wasted."
I saw the sudden flare of speculation in her eyes, but went back indoors to leave her wondering.

These traps are always there, lurking to trap the unwary writer. There's the story of a young cub reporter who wrote an otherwise excellent piece about a much revered local dignitary, a former Artilleryman, who claimed his only injury in the last war was 'a nasty case of gonorrhoea'. A copy editor explained that 'Gunner Ear' was temporary deafness caused by prolonged exposure to the sound of gunfire at close range.

I never got an answer, which suggests to me that none of my teachers knew or could be bothered to find out. The answer, of course, which I got when I stopped going to school and started learning, is that sailors dying at sea were sewn into their hammocks with a couple of cannon balls to carry them down.)
TV
Here in the south we have the ITV Meridian company.
Jo: Dad explained to me why Drake was 'slung atween the roundshot in Nombre Dios Bay'.
He heard me singing the song and asked if I knew what it meant. I also learned how shovels of 'mixed remains' would be heaped into sacks when doing 'damage control' cleaning up a gun turret which had been by a shell, and 'sent over the side' with their ID tags.
"Sometimes, Son, it was all we could do for poor buggers."
The poor man would go quiet for an hour or so after explaining stuff like this to his 'little man', but he never shied away from answering awkward questions. I was lucky with both my parents in this respect.
I've always tried to do the same with my girls, and now my Grandaughter. It seems to work out quite well.

The tale is told, and it may be apocryphal but I do hope not, of a visiting professor lecturing on two particularly obscure dinosaur fossils found in the American south-west. His pet theory was that they were not, as paleontology in general believed, the remains of two different animals, but an example of sexual dimorphism in one species - the males exhibiting markedly different characteristics to the females, as many modern animals still do. There was a speculative silence when he finished. Then one of his audience observed that the visiting professor had also, coincidentally, solved the mystery of why these particular dinosaurs died out. "How so?" asked the puzzled professor. "Well," the student pointed out, "the males all lived in Arizona, while the females all lived in New Mexico."

Most schooners look elegant whilst sailing. The on-deck reality however may be far more busy and frantic than it looks.
There was a fashion, in late 19th century America particularly, for big multi-masted schooners that were supposed to need smaller crews to carry the same cargo. They quickly got a reputation as man-killers. Anyone who's been caught round the ear by the lightweight boom of a sailing dinghy will understand the murderous effect of anything up to seven great timber booms scything across the deck as a big carrier performed an unplanned gybe.

So they say, Jo. When they see a Garfish in the net or on someone's line they know the mackerel won't be far behind. The other claim to fame for the Garfish, which looks very much like a miniature silvery swordfish, is it's bones turn green when it's cooked.
Thus the other Cornish names for it, Greenbone. Or Sea Needle.

epitaph
There is a case to be made that Robert E. Lee was responsible, almost single-handedly, for the years of bitter conflict in the American Civil War, though it was the last thing he wanted. At the very inception he was terribly torn as to which side to support - his heart said one thing, his head the other. Finally he chose to go with his State rather than his own inclination. If the coin had come down the other way, the Union army would have got an outstanding commander rather than a succession of duff ones in the early years, and the Confederacy would have been deprived of one of its few real assets. It really would all have been over by Christmas.

nimble-fingered
There was local businessman who was also a conjurer, who specialised in legerdemain. I was in his stationery shop one day, served by the man himself. He was very much an old school suit and tie shopkeeper, polite but always slight distant from his customers.
He flicked change from his till with those seemingly boneless fingers and put it in my hand. I carefully counted it twice and he frowned a little.
"Is something wrong?"
"No. just checking. I've seen your manipulation act on stage."
He suddenly smiled, presenting a completely different image to usual.
"Young man, I shall take that as a compliment."

Gymnastics is usually graceful, but in a brief moment of chaos my Grandaughter managed to get her nose broken by someone else's elbow. Hospital visit ensued but she's doing fine, no nose splint, not concussed.
Hospital did a brain scan, just in case, and the doctor looked confused when both parents and Grandaughter burst out laughing after he announced, "Your brain is perfectly normal."
Doc said the break should heal naturally and straight. They'll check in seven days, which is apparently the cut off for 'manipulating' if it needs to be straightened. After that the bone's already started to knit back together.
There was no bruising when I saw it the next day, but her little nose is definitely wider than usual at the moment.
But, as she said, "I've been doing gymnastics for eight years now, since I was just a 'Tumble Tot, and this is the first time the gym has needed to fill in an accident report for me."
She's still allowed to go to Gym and 'fling herself around carefully', but has to avoid any pairs or triple work.

I first encountered this word during the radio coverage of the State Funeral of Sir Winston Churchill. At that age I was pretty unfamiliar with funeral proceedings, and I genuinely thought the man said catapult.
'The body has been placed on the catafalque and the funeral cortege will now proceed towards the Thames...'
With my Dad's naval background I'd already heard about 'burial at sea', and I knew about siege catapults, so it wasn't much of a leap for my brain to picture poor old Winston being launched into the river from that 'catapult'.
Being a curious little lad I asked my Dad how this worked, and he straightened out the misunderstanding, so I was spared the embarrassment of sharing my totally wrong impression with everyone at school.

One of the few words Mum always got wrong. Said she'd learned it incorrectly when working in a Naval Supplies Depot for a while during the war, and it stuck.

One of the stokers - not Dad - threw her when he asked for a 'One Inch Stud Onion'.
Another member of staff overheard and pointed Mum towards the bin marked 'Stud Unions: Various' for pipework.
Having worked with horses prior to this Mum only knew one kind of 'stud' and had a fit of the giggles at the image of these shiny threaded brass lumps turning rampant with each other in the bin.

I was once told by a drunken Aussie how the kangaroo got its name. (I don't believe this story, but I like it.)
A white man saw a kangaroo for the first time and asked a nearby aborigine what it was.
"Kangaroo."
It wasn't until some time later, when other questions received the same answer, he realised it was the blackfeller's version of "F*** knows."

Apparently it is also performed with coffee grounds and wine sediment. My nephew's wife does it with coffee grounds, but I'm not entirely convinced.

dagger
Sword and dagger is an ambidextrous fighting technique, and there are specialised daggers known as a main gauche (left hand dagger) which is used both for defence and attack. It wasn't until swordplay became a sport that having an empty free hand became acceptable.
Patti: I knew the word looked familiar, but I had to look it up. Similar to a cutlass, being seen as a long knife or a short sword. Short enough to be used in a fairly confined space.
You have reminded me I've always wanted a cutlass, but my armourer friend refused to make one for me. Quote: "Quite frankly, Black John, the mere thought of you armed with a cutlass terrifies me."
Jo: Sorry to disappoint you but I don't have a yataghan.
Yet.
rapier
reach
One of the biggest benefits of a rapier is its reach. But it's also a disadvantage at times, or in a confined space. If your opponent gets close enough, inside your guard, he's relatively safe from the point.
At this juncture the left hand dagger comes into play. Or smashing the pommel into his face. Or a knee in the balls. We have already established I'm talking about the times before 'fencing' became a sport.

I once convinced a gullible group of tourists that Stonehenge was in fact a picnic area for a long gone extinct race of 40-50 foot tall giants, and that the stones were what remained of benches.
Given suitable 'props' it's quite easy to picture these giants ambling along tracks which would one day become busy roads for modern pygmies.

If the class teacher needed to change an entry in the register, when someone turned up late after it had been called, or if he/she made a mistake, a trusted child would be sent to borrow it, and return it promptly afterwards.
I don't know what was in it, but it smelt pretty volatile. Stood by the teacher waiting to take it back I was fascinated to see how it just dissolved the error, regardless of colour. Just one light dab of the stuff. It didn't cover it, like Typpex or White-Out. Just totally eradicated it and a few seconds later the paper was dry.
I've just done a quick search and apparently the chemical reacts with the pigment in the ink and renders it colourless.

George Washington refused to be titled Your Royal Highness and chose President instead. Or so the story goes.
denied
Patti: I like the story, but I doubt if King was ever on the table for Washington. Republics don't have kings, or hereditary rulers. I believe your lot fought the war of independence under a general banner of 'Freedom from kings'.
And Royal, whether you approve or not, can only come via the bloodlines. Even if occasionally they have to hunt around for some obscure cousin several times removed for a tenuous link. Even illegitimacy has never been a barrier if he's truly all that's available.
The system is self perpetuating.
There's probably still a few blissfully unaware, or very prudent Russians who could claim Tsarist descent but have the sense not to do so. But who knows, one day...

While this is an AI generated answer, here is some stuff that can be corroborated
George Washington firmly rejected offers and suggestions to accept a royal title, like "king" or "His Highness," even though some people, including members of Congress and military figures, thought a monarchy would provide stability, because he was committed to republican ideals and establishing a government free from European monarchical traditions, famously stepping down from power to reinforce civilian rule and setting precedents like the title "Mr. President".
Constitutional Convention & Early Presidency (1789): There was debate in Congress over titles like "His Elective Majesty" or "His Highness the President," with the Senate favoring grandeur and the House preferring a simpler title.
Washington's Stance: He sought advice and ultimately supported the more modest "President," understanding that accepting a crown would betray the revolution's principles.

I remember a policeman at Exeter railway station, fifty, maybe nearer sixty years ago, telling me I shouldn't wear a knife on my belt 'in a public place' because it might make 'some people' feel threatened. But possession wasn't illegal, so if I tucked it in my rucksack there wouldn't be a problem. So I did as he suggested.
I was just a wandering boy passing through. I had no idea that there'd been a high profile local stabbing just a couple of days earlier. To me it's always been primarily a tool, not a weapon.
Gyppo
expert
Generally speaking, a knife that you don't know how to use is a weapon for the other guy. That being said, I've carried one the odd time in seriously uncertain circumstances. I have it still. It's a boat knife, with a wooden handle thick enough to make it float. I always had a compass and a bit of lanyard in the same pack, on the basis that the best place to hide a cake is in a cake-shop. It would take a seriously observant policeman to notice that the thick wooden handle was carefully carved to take my fingers.

misericorde
A long narrow medieval dagger used through gaps in an an opponent's armour to deliver a merciful (quick) death to a mortally wounded opponent, or one who was beaten/disarmed but chose to die rather than be held hostage to ransom.
There was a strict form of words between knights for these occasions. "Do you yield, Sir, rescue or no?"
If the fallen one asked for mercy he was dispatched as quickly as possible. His armour and weapons became 'spoils of war', but his family name wasn't dishonoured. At a purely pragmatic level avoiding ransom meant his family wouldn't be bankrupted, so it became his final act of protection for them.
Misericord without the final 'e' refers to several other things, but all are etymologically linked to mercy.

I didn't watch, but I heard the conversation. The doctor said "It's done. I'm going to give you an eye patch for a few days, but just for a minute, have a look around."

Latitude is your position north and south, longitude (much harder to find) your position east and west. Establishing it accurately depended on having a chronometer which remained accurate, in the conditions met at sea in a sailing ship, over a period of months. The puzzle was finally cracked by a Yorkshire watch-maker (or horologist) called Harrison.

I remember Mum darning the heels in socks. She was good at it, but hated doing it. Dad realised this and came home one day with whole bundle of new socks and gently told her that we weren't that poor that his wife 'had to make and mend'.
From then on she still 'mended' favourite jackets, shirts, or trousers with patches or neat little stitches, but socks went to the rag man. Or were stitched up roughly into small sandbags to serve as doorstoppers. The wartime 'salvage' mentality never completely deserted her.

Someone on 'Freecycle' is trying to get rid of a treadmill. Quote: 'The computer part works just fine, but the belt keeps veering off to one side. I think the thread is stripped on one of the tension adjusters. Could probably be fixed by someone who knows what they're doing.'
Not by me it won't, although I probably know exactly what's wrong. I've fixed a few bread-moulding machines when the belt starts to slip or run out of alignment. But if the adjusters are buggered you probably can't get the bits you need. Especially now. They're probably made of cheap pot-metal instead of proper brass or steel designed to last for decades in a real work environment. Stuff now is made to be disposable.

Halfway through his pint a man comes in, and asks him if he owns the big white horse.
"Yes. Why?"

liripipe
An odd word which you'll rarely encounter in modern life. The Liripipe was the long tail on a medieval hood. My mate the armourer wore one at work and over the years it gradually lost it's tail, an inch or so at a time, as it was nibbled away by machinery, or caught alight from the forge.
Originally a bright scarlet, with the tapering tail reaching down to his waist, it eventually because a grubby red, like venous blood, and the tail finally wasn't much longer than an old time sailor's tarry pigtail. But long before it got that battered it had become part of his image, his 'working clothes'.
Also used, like the way modern traction engine enthusiasts whip off their flat cap to beat out small fires, or grab hot parts , as an emergency glove.
As an item of medieval fashion, circa 14th century it sometimes reached ridiculous lengths, a status symbol suggesting a more wealthy or higher class individual, and could be worn wrapped around the neck (not advisable if it was grabbed from behind), or a few showy loops could be secured to one shoulder with a short strap like an epaulette.
The hood part could cover the shoulders and upper chest, or be more abbreviated.
