(In the seventies there was an alleged plot to blow up The Forth Bridge as a symbolic gesture of independence.  Rumour had it the extreme nationalists had employed an English mercenary to carry out the job.

(I've always had my doubts about that part of the tale, even if the plot was genuine.  I'm sure they would have had no trouble finding one of their own with the necessary skills and enthusiasm for the job.)

But it set the scene for a fraught fifteen minutes or so when a keen Scots copper found a very obvious Englishman with a hefty rucksack wandering along a road in the early hours of the morning.

This is not the first time I've matched a fairly generic description of a suspect ;-)

After they searched my bag and made a few phone calls, wherein my local coppers at home would have described me as a 'probably harmless local character' who keeps erratic hours' they told me to 'Bugger off and stop wasting our time'.

With a true writer's curiosity, and very politely, I asked them why they'd stopped me, and they told me about the 'English Mercenary' before bundling me back out into the darkness and the rain with a grin.

The bastards never even offered me a cup of tea ;-)
