Ell is also a printer's measure: it's the minimimum vertical space needed for printing in English, ie the height of the tallest letter.

I'm not surprised.  Guide dogs in the houses of parliament are one thing, but a full-on half-ton Irish Elk with twelve foot wide antlers would have been memorable.
