I'm Michael, I've been writing on-and-off for years but this is my first time here. I mainly write character drama(?), sometimes horror as well, but I'm new to this and still exploring new styles to figure out what I'm about. Hoping to meet some interesting people here!

Don't be in too much of a hurry to commit yourself to one genre/style.  Experiment a little until you find something that really clicks, something which demands you write it.  Until then you'll learn more about the mechanics of writing by being something of a generalist.

Fiction, non-fiction, short stories, articles.  They'll all teach you something useful.

After a while it becomes more instinctive, which frees you up to think more about the story you are telling.

Don't fall into the trap of putting productivity above everything.  Don't think there's a magic formula.  There are writing courses out there which put the nuts and bolts above creativity and imagination, and others which plug the entirely opposite approach.

To be a happy writer you'll need both.  Some days you'll write 3000 words and find only two hundred of them really do the job you wanted them to.  But the other 2800 aren't wasted if you can see why they didn't work.

In this trade/craft you'll always be learning.  It's a lifelong apprenticeship.  But you can earn as you learn.

The most important thing any writer has is curiosity. About life, people, things, behaviour, the list is endless.  The more you learn the easier it becomes to link seemingly unconnected items together and write well about them.

Above all, have fun.  (if you're not enjoying it, why should your reader.?)
