I went to church on Christmas Eve and ran into a rather disapproving, look-down-your-nose sort of lady among the many other kinds of church ladies. It has prompted a poem I'm working on. I'll try to remember to come back here and post it when I'm done.

Does anyone else want to share church-lady or church-going observations?

Alas, the manmade god and I have parted ways and I've moved on to more spiritual realms without the Catholic-sanctioned er, protected, pedophiles.

Not really my area of expertise, Deb, but still...

From what I've seen, a church lady is an instrument devised by a fancy hat as a means of getting out and about at weekends.

Damned cunning, some of those hats.  Even if they are daft enough to think Sunday outings will ripen the plastic fruit adornments

It's good to know I'm not alone in my musings.  ;-)

We all have our moments.  Even the 'Church Ladies' probably have strange thoughts from time to time.

My mother died on Christmas Eve, 2012. The year of the Sandy Hook catastrophe. My birthday is December 20th. My first son, my mom's first grandson, and second grandchild, was born on December 23rd. My mom died the day after his 18th birthday. She loved Christmas and loved to sing Christmas carols. Since her death, I have tried to go to church on the anniversary of her death to feel closer to her through Christmas carols. However, every year I go, I run into some condescending woman who says I should come to church more often, ...I bite my tongue.

Going back through the notes I saved on my phone, this is the first draft of Church Ladies...

Church Ladies

Tough, rough
give you the scruff
Some give too much
Many, not enough
They judge and belittle
your lack of attendance
throwing disapproving,
barbed looks
at your wardrobe
or maybe it's
your sunny smile
they disapprove of,
hoping to see you
feel as gloomy as they
while they say to the world.
"Look at me! I'm here today!"
All the while
I'm wondering
how to out-scandalize my mother
