I've just found a bloody vape in my jacket pocket.  A jacket I haven't worn for at least a week, probably two.

It's not mine.  I've never used one.

I didn't put it there.  None of my small circle of friends is a vaper.

Flavour, according to the small print, is Pineapple Ice.  Which sounds more like a damned rapper to me  ;-)

This mystery is going to puzzle me for far longer than it should.

The flap on the pocket was buttoned shut.  I only looked in there today because it felt a bit heavier than usual, a lopsided weight as I was putting it on, and I wondered what was causing this.

Did someone get near enough to rummage in my pocket without me knowing?

Fairly unlikely.  My best theory is that someone sat next to me on a crowded bus, where close proximity to strangers has to be accepted, mistook my pocket for theirs, and is probably still wondering where his/her vape went.

And no, I'm not tempted to try it.

Did someone get near enough to rummage your pocket without you noticing?  Possibly - but they mostly take things rather than leaving things behind.  That would be a sort of anti-crime, like cheering up with malice aforethought or breaking in and doing the housework.

But perhaps the vape was material evidence in some nefarious act, that the original owner was desperate to be rid of.  Have you checked if it only contains pineapple-flavoured steam, or a roll of microfilm?  The clue could be in the name - maybe the Ice is stolen diamonds!  For a crime writer, you don't seem to have explored the possibilities very thoroughly.

I think it had been leaking slightly.  Whatever the  reason it felt unpleasantly slimy.  I'm sure saliva from the user would have dried out.

Strange how some things seem more repulsive than others.  I've put on rubber gloves to rummage around unbunging a badly blocked toilet or drain, but that vape felt particularly 'unclean'.  It's wrapped up now and destined to go into a vape bin in a local shop.

If I'm throwing away a fortune in illicit diamonds, or a couple of ounces of some drug dealers pure Fentanyl I'm not bothered.  I just want rid.

After handling I washed my hands like a surgeon 'scrubbing up' before an operation.

In size and weight it's very much like an angular version of an asthma 'puffer', and over the years I've spent a lot of time thinking about how they could be used to carry small amounts of explosive or compact weapons.
