So, the latest update to the site/platform has given us new "features" that I assume are beloved by many. Being a singular and cranky old fart, I'm not dependant on dopamine hits from my computer.

Not only is that like button now taking up space and making me scroll more (oh, the horrors), but there is also a "feature" that emails someone who's message has been quoted AND you get the ALERT at the top of the screen to tell you in case you hadn't sufficiently ignored this fast-paced breaking news.

I know that engagement is key and that platforms are trying their best to pursue their own dreams even as they shatter other people's peace and calm. But ... go to your settings screen and you can poke around and see all the other new notifications they are going to bombard you with, and then erase some or all of them.

Or revel in knowing that we love you. Dearly. Always. And forever.

So why do we need a like button?

Guess I'll make do

Gyppo

Exactly.  it's a complete waste of electrons.

Mastafrank

Speaking of electrons...

Microsoft flight simulator is a great way to sight see without having to pay hundreds of dollars..

I've been having fun zooming about in an F-18..it uses Triangular irregular networks (TIN) for realistic views of landscapes and cities.

So there is a useful purpose to computer games after all?

Sounds like fun, frank.  Can you use a sonic boom to break the glass in greenhouses ;-)

It's just for fun.the easy mode is ridiculously simple. I haven't smashed any glass ceilings yet.

Speaking of smashed glass...

Last month a tenant on the 3rd floor threw a chair threw his living room window...2 weeks later he did the same thing again

Once is chance.  Twice is co-incidence.  Three times is a bloody nutter.

=====

An elderly neighbour had the glass in her front door broken with an airgun pellet.  The police found it in her hallway when they came out to investigate her call about vandalism.

She came and knocked on the door, having heard me shooting quite regularly in our back garden, and asked Mum if she thought I might be responsible.

She made a point of saying I didn't seem the kind of boy to do such things, 'but could it have been an accident?'

Mum knew it would have had to be a 'magic pellet' to reach across the cranky old bitch's tall roof, and then change direction and loop back to hit the door.  Plus the fact that firing down our garden was at right angles to her bungalow.

"No," said Mum.  "My boy doesn't do careless with guns."  Which would have been true enough .  But she then went on to say.  "If he did shoot your window it would have been deliberate.

Cheers, Mum.  What a backhanded vote of confidence ;-)

At least she knew her boy!

Both my parents seemed to have a direct line into the way my mind worked.  Both had the sense and decency not to abuse this knowledge.  Trust is a two way street.

Gordon Lightfoot was 84

Gyppo

Bugger.  I liked Lightfoot.  But 84 is a good run.  He had a pleasant voice, and his songs nearly all told a story.

I think the first song of his I ever heard was Early Morning Rain.
