OK, so we all know that if you break a mirror that's seven years' bad luck.  How about if you have a heavy mirror fall off the bathroom wall, hit the hand basin, somersault into the bath panel, and do no damage either to itself or anything else?  Is that seven years' good luck?  The nylon cord at the back had broken, but not - this was the really weird thing - where it passed over the nail, just at some random place halfway between the nail and the ring the cord was attached to.  Clearly the mirror fairy having some fun with me.

I don't know about seven years good luck.  But you clearly had a few seconds of exceptional luck.

That sounds like a lot of sounds that would scare the daylights out of you. I hope this happened during the day and you didn't wake up to this shit in the middle of the night. And that frame must be excellent.

It sounded like we were having a break-in, Chick.  Happily it was during the day, but neither the dog nor I could figure out what had happened.  We went outside to see if something had fallen off the roof.  It was only when I'd given up and thought I'd go to the bathroom before I sat down again that I discovered the culprit.

Spell Chick

I'm glad you are all safe and sound and hope you found a sturdy way to rehang it. Carbon fiber steel or something.

I'd be tempted to rehang it with a chain or a wire.

Or stick it to the wall with one of the 'construction adhesives', like 'No More Nails'.  But these can present a problem if you ever move house and want to take the mirror  with you.

For the really superstitious the only sensible answer is to stop using glass mirrors and buy one made from polished metal.  Or even the shiny plastic 'mirror on a roll'.  Both of these can be damaged, but they don't break.

Brass picture-hanging wire.  And I checked both rings and the nail in the wall.  If it manages to come down again, it might be my problem but it won't be my fault.

I also checked the paintings over my bed (sailing boats, Gyppo: wouldn't you know?) only to find I'd already thought of that and replaced the old cords with wires, just in case.

Good grief Jo,buy yourself a lotto ticket ☺️

This has just reminded me of the three little coloured hollow glass balls in a small net which used to hang in my office/bedroom window at the house.  Mum called them 'Witch Balls'.  Commercial fishermen would have called them 'Net Floats'.  She had inherited them, along with the name, from her mum,

They'd been there for many years, and when I went to take them down ready for the move the cotton cod-line - similar to macramé cord - of the net just crumbled away to dust where the sunlight had slowly weakened it over the years.  I suspect they may well have hung undamaged for many more years if I hadn't disturbed them.

I managed to save them, and tucked them away safely to make a little net for them later.  (Which I must do now I've remembered them.)

I rather doubt if these were ever used as real net floats, even before they were replaced commercially with modern plastic or sometimes hollow metal equivalents, but they are relatively thick 'blown' glass and my Gran remembered picking up similar ones along the beaches 'Up North' when she was child.  Along with 'sea coal', from off-shore coal deposits which washed up after a heavy storm and burned with a blue-ish flame once it had been allowed to dry out for a day or two.

Why these floats became 'witch balls' I've no real idea, but perhaps something made from glass, which has survived bashing around against a rocky shore, was seen as lucky.  From there it's only a short step to adopting them as a lucky charm'.  Or perhaps it was a folklore connection with crystal balls.  I doubt if there's any solid answer to that one.

Time to rummage in the rarely visited draw and dig out my netmaking tools.  I'll post a picture when they're fixed and back in the window.

My Grandaughter will love it, and my eldest will just smile quietly to herself.

I'm glad you thought to keep yourself from being bashed in the head. I can see the obituary otherwise.

Reminds me of a man I met early one morning by the small harbour at Golant, in Cornwall.  He was stood on the waterfront, dog lead in hand, and his dog was swimming strongly out to sea.  I initially thought it was seal's head bobbing around out there.

We fell into a conversation and he told me his dog went for a swim most mornings except when the sea was too rough.  "I never encouraged him, he just chose to when I took him off the lead for a run around."

The dog swam out to the marker buoy at the harbour entrance, probably about fifty yards away, and then started swimming back.

"He was hit by a motorboat once, got a nasty cut on his head from the propeller.  I had to take him to the vet for a check-up and some stitches.

"I was an hour late for work that morning.  My boss said it was so unbelievable it had to be true.

"I kept him on the lead for a while, until the stitches were out, and even then he was reluctant to swim so far out.  But a few weeks later he was back to his regular swim to the buoy and back."

Meanwhile my dog is terrified of water.

Doesn't help that I chucked him off a 5 foot ledge into the river. Never heard a dog scream bloody murder like pigs 🥺😭

Joe was taking a photography class when LC was a puppy and he used her and Trip as subjects for lots of pictures. She learned to HATE a camera. He had a real camera and a video camera and she still hated even phone cameras. I think she heard about cameras stealing your soul or something. I never tried pointing something not a camera at her (except for all the food stuff that she loved) so I don't really know her level of discernment.
