I read recently that around 60-% - and rising - of all internet traffic is created by automated 'bots' indiscriminately trying to sell you something.  Or AI generated pseudo-social-commentary, (Fake News).  Think how much better the system could work without all this automated 'sludge' bunging up its veins.

I can tell you that so far just today 178 'new members' have 'signed up' to the forum, and we'll never see any of them on the 'hello' page.  The names show that most of them are links to gambling sites.  Which at least makes a change to the relentless barrage of penis or breast enlargement offers which cluttered the system several years back.

A few still get through the ad-block filters, such as the 'New Delhi Escorts' advert due to changing email addresses.

Like television, the internet is a victim of its own success.  Judging from how much garbage actually reaches me, the filters seem to be working pretty well.
