Well, that is, just the first draft, but still. That came as a bit of a surprise. I thought I was going to need another couple of chapters, but suddenly everything just fell in place and I wrote that last sentence.

Excellent, Dan.  And are you pleased with it?  I know you'll want to do a bit of polishing still, but has it generally achieved what you wanted it to?  Or are you the kind of writer who has to step back for a month before you'll know that?

Whatever, the finish is an accomplishment in itself.  I'm guessing here, but I would think a thousand novels are started for every one which is completed.  I read once that the definition of a professional as distinct from amateur writer is that he usually finishes what he starts.

Anyway, good luck with the editing, and best wishes for its future.

Thank you, Jo.

Yes, I am pleased with it. I am, indeed, going to step away from it for about a month now, just to get some distance - and to focus on other things (I want to work a bit on my drawing skills) - but I already know of a few things that need polishing.

I created some minor plot holes, and did so knowingly, because I knew the changes made for a better story, so I'll have to fix those. Easy fixes. I also got some feedback from an alpha-reader on some historical inaccuracies (not a very big deal, as it's fantasy) so I'll have to take a closer look at that as well.

But for now, the MS is in that locked (virtual) drawer, and I'm still in that intoxicated state of writer's euphoria.  :)

And isn't that a glorious state to be in for a while?

Well done, Dan.
