Success Stories / Re: Kepler's Son
March 09, 2023, 10:11:10 AM
It's always been the way with all fiction published by anyone but it still feels weird when readers find nuances and aspects of a novel that I hadn't written in!
In my Flying Crooked series of SF novellas there's a very clever AI called CAN for short. Think HAL except CAN has by now spread to every piece of electronics in the Keplerian System and on to Earth. Now this reviewer seems upset that an AI could have emotions ignoring modern neuroscience suggesting any complex collection of electrochemical impulses could develop a personality. CAN is wholly AI but the reviewer wants to think it has a little organic plant in there. Hahah. Here is her review https://rosieoliver.wordpress.com/2023/03/07/review-keplers-son-by-geoff-nelder/#like-6972

It's a tad worrying for me because apart from my scifi novels my writing leans towards the surreal. Luckily I find paying outlets for them and sold a short story to Fiction4All yesterday. But if we distinguish AI text from real writers' craft because of slight errors or bizarre context then I'm doomed!

Getting Published / Dizzy but no Wormhole
February 26, 2023, 03:48:38 PM
We writers have been warned off using dreams in our fiction. But what if you wake up in a strange hospital and a rough nurse tries to persuade you that all those decades of real life you've led was all an overnight dream? How do you know whether you reading this note is really a dream? Or not? So, this is the theme of one of my more surreal short stories, Dizzy, but no Wormhole I originally wrote in the week for TheHorrorZine but then realised it was too hilarious for them. Fiction4All accepted this morning so that's another tenner from them (A British-based publisher of anthologies and novels, but accepting from all over the world) in their upcoming Dark Tales III antho.

Word Play / Re: We all have questions

Luckily, much of Monty Python is timeless and appeals to all ages above 5 though not to every brain. I played the argument to my 5 grandchildren aged 9 to 16 and all but one rolled about laughing and reenacted it to each other.

Their parents were not so pleased when the kids used the same kind of reactions to proper questions and points from the grownups.

The Horrorzine made my imaginary friend story their editor's pick of the year 2010. In my tale a man thought he had amnesia but he discovered he was a girl's imaginary friend. He had to kill off her new imaginary friends for him to stay 'alive'.

I emailed the builder reminding him he said our extension build will start end of July. I asked when is the end of July? He replied 5th September :)
