Writer's Talk / So long folks, moving on to greener pasture
« on: January 02, 2020, 05:08:12 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I have decided to delete my membership from this group as it no longer fits with my original intentions. I don't play games and this is no longer a writer's forum.

I shall miss many of you as we have known each other a very long time since 2012, I think.

If you wish to friend me on Facebook on my author page, please look me up on Facebook. Do remind me who you are via Messsenger.

Bye and hope to catch up via social media. (Bye Gyppo, much success)

Writer's Talk / Season's Greetings
« on: December 12, 2019, 03:53:50 PM »
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all fellow writers on this forum. 2020 is going to be a fantastic year for me.  I am going to Italy to do some wartime research and then on to Austria for a few days.

We are having a new log cabin built in the garden for my writing and art and then my novel will be finished late Spring before sending it out to agents and publishers.

I am also organising a Romantic Novelists' Association Spring Party for March 2021.  If anyone wishes to network with publishers and agents please let me know if you would like to attend the party in Exeter.  Plenty of time, but thought some of you may be interested in future events.

HAVE A GREAT FESTIVE SEASON

All the best to you

The Coffee Table / Watch out for the birds
« on: April 28, 2019, 12:09:45 PM »
Sir Isaac Newton wondered why
an apple falls down from the sky.
All the crows on seeing this,
decided they would take the piss.
One by one they grabbed a stalk
and flew up high where men would walk,
and just before it was time for bed,
They dropped the apples on their head.
So next time you are out and about,
you need to watch and not to shout.
Don’t stare into your mobile phone
Because above, you’re not alone.
Don’t press the buttons to send a text
just remember you are next!

I wrote this the other day when someone asked me about birds eating fruit.

Writer's Talk / RNA Exeter Group
« on: March 01, 2019, 09:59:03 AM »
If there are any writers out there who would like to join our Exeter group on 13 March we are open for guest writers to meet for lunch.

If you live in Devon or Dorset or Cornwall, please do come along to the Chevalier Inn, Fore Street, Exeter at noon.

If anyone is coming down here on holiday soon, please get in touch with me and I will arrange to meet up with you.

Our group meets every second Wednesday in the month, so anytime you are in this area (and it is a fantastic county)  please contact me. You don't have to write romance to join us.  We have some great and well-known authors here too with lots of help for new writers.

Writer's Talk / Prologues
« on: February 23, 2019, 06:01:33 PM »
There was a time on MWC that we discussed prologues and we more or less agreed that people tend to skip them.  I discovered today that this is not the case.  I asked around in my romance writers' group (RNA) and everyone agreed they use them very frequently these days.  Has the trend changed or is this down to the genre?

Writer's Talk / Feedback beware
« on: February 10, 2019, 12:16:38 PM »
I've been in conversation this morning with an author who is on her second novel.  She tells me about a film that came out last week worth millions of dollars.  She has been posting some of her work on line last year and several months later this film is released and the story is exactly the same as she wrote on a writing forum several months before.

Now this story is not one that is obvious and in my opinion is fairly unique.  However, the film bears the scenes she has written in her novel.  The places she has written about are in the film and the characters are doing exactly as she had written. From her account of this problem, I cannot see that anyone could have written a parallel story, so close to her book.

As this is a fantasy historical romance,  and this is more than coincidence because her story is not one that anyone could have made up, it does feel like plagiarism.

I have to say I am reluctant to post my work here or anywhere else.  I shouldn't need to.  Just occasionally I post a snippet for feedback, but long pieces of text, absolutely no.

I would be interested in your comments.  Is the American market gleaning ideas on the backs of vulnerable authors?

Review My Writing - Getting Started / Does this hook the reader?
« on: January 23, 2019, 11:06:43 AM »
When Agnes Brownlea moved into her house in Diamond Street, it wasn’t long before her sinful life would bite her back. Ernie’s mother had passed away and the house, now bequeathed to her only son, provided the family with security.  Agnes perceived this as a blessing after a tangled quarrel with her family who lived in County Durham. It was time to put the past behind her and move on with a sense of normality and a new town.

Writer's Talk / Disappointed
« on: January 19, 2019, 04:35:21 PM »
I hate to say to this but I am becoming a bit disappointed with this forum.  It seems full of games and I thought the idea was to help each other with writing.

I have lots of good friends here whom I've known a long time and all are lovely people, but when I looked down the topics there are lots of trivial games and I am finding it difficult to take seriously the purpose of this forum.

Mywriterscircle ex-members I felt many were serious authors and writers.  But since the changes it's become more of a playground.  I am still happy to comment in the Review My Work topic, but as for the games they seem to be taking over the purpose of this forum.

I think we need to be encouraging more writing than games.  I am fond of all of you and want to continue helping new writers to succeed.

Writer's Talk / Dunkirk experiences
« on: January 15, 2019, 09:43:26 AM »
I wondered if some of you have stories to tell about your grandfather/father being at Dunkirk in WW2.  I am writing a chapter about the battle as part of my character's war experiences.  An author friend of mine recently sent me her father's history and it turns out that her Dad and mine probably met on the road to Dunkirk. We both felt quite overwhelmed by that fact. So I've asked her if I can put a pair of fictional characters into the story based on her Dad's story and in their memory we both agreed to it.

So if you have anything you can add to the battle and handed down stories as the soldiers made their way to the beaches, I would love to hear from you.  All I want is to add more authenticity to my novel.  I will not be writing about your Dad, but all experiences are important to me as part of the research.

Many thanks

Lin

Writer's Talk / I may be some time ...
« on: October 24, 2018, 03:09:13 PM »
After being in pain for almost three years with osteoarthritis and a bad back and hip, they finally got me into hospital for a new hip tomorrow. It will take a few days to get me back on my feet, but there has never been so much relief in my life.  Pain is a dreadful thing as it takes away your confidence and makes you feel very confused about everyday things. Finally I look forward to 2019 with a new outlook on life.

Back soon
