When you split up or divorce, and you use the family pet to indicate ownership.  ("I'm keeping the house - the cat is mine, and he won't live anywhere else.  You can have the boat - the cat won't go anywhere near it.")  There is some suggestion that the apostrophe we are all familiar with is a gnomic representation of a cat's tail.
