I just saw the movie "Call Me By Your Name" and can't get it out of my head. Fantastic movie (the book as well). I highly recommend seeing it when it comes to your area. I drove an hour and a half to see it yesterday. Totally worth it.

I've never seen a movie end quite like this one does. Elio's emotions play out before us as we listen to this song, Visions of Gideon by Sufjan Stevens. Rumour has it that Timothy Chalamet, the actor who played Elio, was listening to the recording during his performance, so it is perfectly choreographed with the song and, as you'll see, the end titles of the movie. But I wasn't watching the titles, just the raw emotion on Elio's face play out. The artistic effect of all this, the acting, the song, the setting in front of the fire, the director's decision to lay the titles over the scene all underline the thematic antagonism that Time plays in the movie. Elio and Oliver run out of Time. Elio is reaching an emotional crescendo while the movie is in the process of ending and you just don't want it to end. Brilliant.

Enjoy Visions of Gideon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJLs-4J5ZYk

Here's another Sufjan song, Mystery of Love, that's also from the movie and fits perfectly with for the movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0CP9zpbmAQ

See the movie when you have a chance. Even better read the book. But, fair warning, they will stick with you.

When I hear this tune, which I like anyway, it reminds me of one evening in Cornwall.

Dusk had deepened imperceptibly into darkness without me being aware.  I was fishing, stood knee deep in a river, just downstream of a classic stone-built humpback bridge on a singe lane country road and no traffic had passed for several minutes.  There were little silvery flickers in the near distance, where as the smooth gliding waters were split by by a small island, beyond the deep pool where my line thrummed gently with the passing currents as I let the weight bounce slowly along the gravel bottom.

One of those perfect moments, merged with nature.

There was a concert in the grounds of the stately home about half a mile away, which I was largely ignoring.  Then the man himself played this tune as the finale.

I'm not a great fan of the delivery, and it's definitely overworked with too many repetitions of the same words.  (If you can't make up more verses let it be short.)

A haunting song, but a moving one, nonetheless.

I must learn the guitar in this. Simple enough.

These lyrics are a moving piece of poetry on their own, in my humble opinion. (https://www.google.com/search?q=oats+in+the+water+ben+howard+lyrics&oq=Oats+in+the+Water+Ben+Howard&aqs=chrome.2.35i39j69i61j0l4.2761j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8)

My eldest son is into K-pop and J-pop, music and has recently turned me on to Japanese anime. We've watched several series together in Japanese. subtitled in English, of course. One of my favorites being, Girl's Last Tour.

There are so many fantastically written stories out there, in genres I never thought I could have the patience for.

To you parents like me out there, give it a chance, you'll be surprised at the clever writing in in anime.

My favorites, so far, Ollie:
A Place Further than the Universe
Violet Evergarden
Made in Abyss
Little Witch Academia
Full Metal Alchemist
Girl's Last Tour

There is one more but I can't remember the name. It starts of with a cow skull, disguised as a man, buying a girl from an auction...

And I saw the anime horror, Perfect Blue, for which I have mixed emotions.
One about camping that I don't remember the name of.

I know you're into anime, I think you might enjoy these.

Let me know what you think, if you watch, or have already seen any of these.  Also, I'm open to suggestions. It would be fun to turn my son on to one, for a change.
  Enjoy, if you haven't already.

All the best-
~Deb  :)

Okay, I noticed that you have a Netflix original (two actually) on your list, so picking some things that are currently on Netflix seems like a decent idea.

Here's a few really interesting shows on there at the moment. And then when making this list I realized that three of these shows have the same director.

Cowboy Bebop
Trigun

I'm a massive fan of Miyazaki. I probably would be even if I wasn't interested in animation because his anti-war, environmentalist (although he's also obsessed with flight, like me) themes really appeal to me. Actually, I'm going to be watching his feature film debut Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro later (it's on Netflix).

I was alone in the house one night, polishing my rapier and dagger before one of our shows the next day, and I heard a voice saying "You're still with us then, Ned Tappet?"

I had never written a Ned Tappet story before then so the name came from nowhere.

I've written about him since, and he often used to turn up in the old Station Bar on MWC.

Being a new Grandfather I usually wake up to the refrains of things like 'The wheels on the bus', or 'five little monkeys'.
But not this morning.
This morning it was Rhianna Giddens singing Wayfaring Stranger. If you've never heard this one then I think you're in for a treat.
She sings it so simply. I rate it more than Eva Cassidy's version or even Fretkillr's.  Her banjo playing is so evocative and haunting. Hope you like.

As happens these days with media, someone else recommends something they think you might like. All at the touch of a key because you happened to press a 'like' or hit on a particular track.
Most of the time the recommends are dire.
Sometimes though 'they' hit upon a diamond in the rough.
Like this one by a band called Black Top Mojo. They're really great.
Most of their early stuff is covers of other bands works but done slightly different.
But Because of this superb cover, I went looking for the original and was happy to see/hear, that in my opinion their cover was better. You, of course, can decide for yourself.

This song was released in July 1967. The first time I really listened to this song, I was in first grade on my way to school in 1970/71. My stepdad was driving and I remember holding back the tears until I got out of the car, because it was such a moving song to me. I'm an empath from way back.

Take a listen.

Take a long listen and look up the lyrics. A haunting song.

And on a lighter note, Tramp, sung by Otis Redding and Carla Thomas (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKlCA0-Arks&ab_channel=77GhettoD), released the same year as the song above, 1967 - December, and one of Otis Redding's final recordings before his death.

I think the history of this song is kind of cool. Check it out on Wiki. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tramp_(Lowell_Fulson_song))

Yes, I know, not really a song, but it's been in my head all day. Trying to get it in my fingers as well, but although this is the second day I'm working on it (and the notes really aren't all that difficult), I still can't seem to get all the notes right. So I can totally forget about interpretation at the moment. I plain suck at this piece. For now, anyway.

I won't promise anything, but I'll try to remember.

I actually do love the feminine (high C- or even higher!) soprano. I'm thinking "Queen of the Night" here. Beautiful! And there's so very few who can actually sing this. Mozart didn't write for "a soprano", he wrote this role with a very specific singer in mind, and tailored the music to suit her voice and bring out the best in her.

One song leads to another, and another...

Deb, I sometimes listened to Magna Carta's Elizabethan - which you linked a few posts ago - whilst cleaning my armour and weapons after an arena show.  A good tune for easing down from a performer's high, or for defeating the 'black hole slump'.

I had never heard of her - it was the most beautiful version I came across after a quick search :)

One time, years ago, I walked in to a shopping centre during my lunch break. Street level was the upper floor; way down on the lower level there was a baby grand piano in the middle of the courtyard, and a pianist had just started playing this piece. The music echoed throughout the entire building. Stopped me in my tracks. I just stood there, spellbound, leaning over the balcony watching, until they were done.

Do I ever love a good piano solo!!

Damn, Sunny, I wish you were my downstairs neighbour.

I miss my grand. Gave it to the ex and our children when we got our divorce, and only took my old upright with me. Bought me a better upright just a couple of months ago, and love that one almost as much as my grand (I still get to play it when I'm visiting with the ex and children, which is at least once a week), but my downstairs neighbour seems to hate good music.

Been working on this one lately. A sweet little Schubert song.

This is brilliant. Sorry you have to skip the ad.

While you listen imagine a sultry jazz club and a couple sitting at a table by the dance floor. They sip ice-cold champagne and as the intro kicks in they turn to focus on the band. Then the tempo switches to the Latin rhythm and they glance at each other, put down their glasses, and by the third bar they are on the floor dancing a divine rhumba. She is slim, in heels, a flimsy summer dress. Now listen and picture it ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQKSO099urI

... but the man is Gyppo, hirsute, heavily bearded and in combats and boots. And yet, he has all the moves. Rough hands and dirty nails form delicate shapes in the air. A ferret pops his head out of Gyppo's jacket pocket and sways to the music.

Then the vocals begin, and the ferret sings along in a high falsetto.

That's my favourite song/image today.

It's amazing just how much much muck  'Green Fairy Liquid' can shift.  If you work it in and give it time to work a bit before scrubbing it off.  Most people are in too much of a hurry.  There's also something to be said for gloves and barrier cream if you're not afraid of being called a 'Bloody Jessie'.

Mind you, aircraft oil is, or certainly was, pretty heavyweight stuff and therefore pretty tenacious stuff.

Singing of course. I'm King Kaspar. Performance on Dec 13. I need to know my part by September, so we can then concentrate on musical interpretation and, o yes, I need to know it by heart. And then there's the acting bit. I've never done opera before, so this is new territory for me.

All great suggestions and shares, guys. <3

John Denver - Sunshine On My Shoulders (Official Audio) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diwuu_r6GJE&ab_channel=JohnDenverVEVO)

One of my all-time favorites.  I wish he had lived to make more music but man, I love his voice and his guitar sound - and the words, so simple but resonate in the child within my soul.

Three today...

Music from my childhood, from the massive old valve radio in the caravan.  In my memory this has always been Fernando's Hideaway rather than Hernando's.

Also, apparently I insisted on listening to the Saturday Skiffle Club broadcast if we were at home.  Here's one of the 'cutting edge' tunes I really liked.

"Have you seen a child?" from Amahl and the Night Visitors, by Menotti. I'm singing King Kaspar (the guy in the yellow robes). Soon now.

I don't know how this can be my favourite song today, not after having sung it at least a thousand times over the last couple of months, but there we have it.

Does this have anything to do with Alma's name or is this an uncanny coincidence?

Since Gyppo took me to my Bluegrass roots, here's Dueling Banjos with Roy Clark and Buck Trent on Hee-Haw. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47NPOkNqANQ&ab_channel=MaximilianoGabrielBarrios)

But the best of this is Charlie Daniels Band in The Devil Went Down to Georgia. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBjPAqmnvGA&ab_channel=CHARLIEDANIELSVEVO})

Deb.  Complete coincidence.  As far as I know there were no Almas on either side of her family tree.

Little old ladies who discover her name sometimes ask if she was named after Alma Cogan.  My daughter had never heard of Alma Cogan.

But the name turns up all over the place, in Alma Road, or Alma Lane.  There's an Alma pub about four miles away where I spent a lot of time in my early twenties.  These locations are usually named after The Battle of Alma, from the Crimean war, 1854.  After this battle a lot of children, both female and male, were named Alma, so although fairly unusual these days it still features in most books of baby names.

It also turns up in business names.  Somewhere we have a picture of Alma stood by a van labelled Alma Rail Maintenance.

=====

My song for today is She's a Rainbow,  by The Rolling Stones.

Celtic Folk Music - Crystal Fire Woods Traditional Music by Ean Grimm & the Fiechters. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2UwW__NL-U&ab_channel=TraditionalMusicbyEanGrimm%26theFiechters)
Elegant and relaxing.
Don't watch the video. There is nothing to see. Turn the music on in the background and meditate, work in the garden, take a bath, or get a massage. Just listen.
