The man has a point.  Of the two fake humility is far more grating.

One of my cousins died this morning. I hardly knew her, but somehow it's basically all I can think about today. Funny, eh?

I don't think it is funny, Dan.  It's the old blood's-thicker-than-water thing, isn't it? - family remains family whether we see them or not.  I think it's nice that you're thinking of your cousin.  I think she would think so too.

She probably would. She was a nice person. Sweet, and kind. Definitely a lot nicer than me. I mean, I obviously have feelings, but I just don't show them as easily as others. To many people, I come across as stand-offish and aloof. Not her, though. Such a bubbly personality.

I'm sorry for your loss. Family, even distant family, holds a special place.

I'm sorry too, Dan.

Sorry for your loss, Dansinger. I've lost so many family members I've found myself the oldest Nelder within 200 miles. Scary.

Yes, it's a scary thing. My dad is the only one of the previous generation still alive. But, on a lighter note, I promised my children I'm going to live to 120 years. Let's hope I can keep that promise.

I have absolutely no desire to live that long. My mother died at 84 as she was getting ready to go out to meet a friend for lunch. Her sisters, now 94 and 96 are both still alive. They are not doing well. Both need care takers. Both are nearly deaf, nearly blind, unable to do much beyond exist. This sounds absolutely horrible to me. Luckily, I look just like my mother. I'm looking forward to 84 with equanimity. It seems better than the alternative.

I'm with you, Chick.  It's a question of Never mind the width, feel the quality.  Extra years are only worth having if, on the whole, they're enjoyable.  It shouldn't be an endurance test.
