Plans for 2018
« on: December 26, 2017, 05:24:42 PM »
I've heard that plans without timelines are wishes.

Goals include a timeline or a concrete measurable outcome.

I want to write more isn't worth squat. More what? Words? Quality?

I will write one blog post a week is a concrete measurable goal.

If planning for a whole year seems insurmountable, make each step smaller and more possible. I will post a blog each week in January. After a success, it's often easier to stay on a roll.

Good luck

I'll finish the first draft of my novel, by resisting the urge to rewrite and just buggering on until I'm done.

Woah, 2016 flashback.

I haven't given it much thought yet, but the other day I decided I want to write at least one poem a week. Even if it's a crap poem.

And I want to get back to writing fiction as well, but not sure how to get into fiction writing mode again. It's as if I lost my fiction writing skills when I got better at writing poetry.

  • My biggest regret is that I didn't write more.

For 2018 I want to finish a novel I'm proud of. I've written a few novels, most never getting past the first draft stage because I knew they were crap in need of dire improvement, and I think my writing has progressed to the point where I can achieve this goal.

Wish me luck!

Of course we wish you luck.

But don't be so quick to dismiss the first draft.  First drafts are always cra...in dire need of improvement.  It's what they're for.  Do as much revision as you want to/think it needs, then put it aside and come back later for a third bite of the cherry.  Five or six rewrites are by no means unusual.  It's all part of the process of producing a good book.

Yeah, I know. I've kept them, and I plan to revise someday, but my calendar doesn't list somedays.  ;)

All you have to do is backspace, strike out someday, and insert a proper day.  It can be surprisingly easy once you get started on revisions.

I haven't written much for a few years but recently I managed a couple of short fiction pieces. Hoping to keep that going and take part in NaPo again this year. Would also be great to get my arse into gear and get the novel sent out. Would be nice to end 2018 feeling more of a writer than I did at the end of 2016 and 2017.

That's a good enough reason for being here.
