Rum

Traditionally measured in tots.  Which may explain why I had my first taste, presumably well watered down, in the Stokers' Mess on HMS Sheffield - Dad's last ship before becoming a Civvy -  at the age of eighteen months.  I have no recollection of this, so it may well have been my first alcoholic blackout as well ;)

We used to have a tiny little photo of this momentous and life-shaping event but it seems to have vanished from the family archives.  I live in hope that I may stumbles across it again one day.  According to Dad 'The lads cobbled together a little sailor's uniform for you, including a cap with a cut-down tally-band so the world would know which ship you belonged to.'

Apparently 'Ginger's Little Man' became something of a Mess Mascot during that final cruise, reminding 'the lads' there was a world back home, a life beyond 'The Grey Funnel Line'.
