In my kitchen drawer I have a nesting set of what Patti would call measuring cups, although the pound shop sells them as measuring spoons. (The smaller ones are indeed spoon sizes.) Very cheap and rarely used, but sometimes it's easier to just use the measurements given when trying out a new recipe than mess around with conversions.
If you like the results then it's worth changing to familiar units for regular use.
I also have a very old American cookbook, which tells me how to cook 'honey-glazed bear steaks'. Never likely to try that one, but it's reassuring to know it's there if I ever have a marauding bear in my back garden. (If I do I shall probably serve them with a side dish of the accidentally ingested 'magic mushrooms' which brought the Ursine intruder into my world.
