I just saw the movie "Call Me By Your Name" and can't get it out of my head. Fantastic movie (the book as well). I highly recommend seeing it when it comes to your area. I drove an hour and a half to see it yesterday. Totally worth it.
I've never seen a movie end quite like this one does. Elio's emotions play out before us as we listen to this song, Visions of Gideon by Sufjan Stevens. Rumour has it that Timothy Chalamet, the actor who played Elio, was listening to the recording during his performance, so it is perfectly choreographed with the song and, as you'll see, the end titles of the movie. But I wasn't watching the titles, just the raw emotion on Elio's face play out. The artistic effect of all this, the acting, the song, the setting in front of the fire, the director's decision to lay the titles over the scene all underline the thematic antagonism that Time plays in the movie. Elio and Oliver run out of Time. Elio is reaching an emotional crescendo while the movie is in the process of ending and you just don't want it to end. Brilliant.
