fuller

=====

This is an interesting word with more the one meaning, apart from the obvious.

1)  Fuller;  A medieval/biblical name for a person who cleans garments using Fuller's Earth to absorb, loosen, and remove stains.  Fuller's Earth is used in mobile decontamination units at chemical, biological, and nuclear incidents.  Often also available as a 'cleaning paste' from pound shops under a variety of trade names ;-)

2)  The groove(s) down either or both sides of a knife/sword blade which reduces the amount of metal to remove some of the weight and make it less unwieldy.  It makes it slightly more flexible, and thus more durable in use.  Also less liable to break.

This is the point to stop reading if you are of a particularly squeamish disposition...  But being curious writers you'll probably ignore this warning.

The fuller in a blade is commonly referred to, by those who don't know the mechanical reasons, as 'the blood groove'.  They rather fancifully think it allows the blood to drain more readily from a victim.  This fails to take into account the way muscles automatically clenching tight around the blade, thus making quite a good seal until it's yanked free  (There's a lot of mythology around edged weapons.)  If exsanguination was enhanced by a 'blood groove' there would have been one on the classic black 'commando dagger'.
