Wasn't that a delightful image? I pictures little scraps of papers with words, definitions, etymology, and first usage floating into a pile beneath upended individual. Doesn't that remind you of the beginnings of the OED?

Have you ever thought what a monumental and daunting project it must have been to compile that first dictionary?

I have read books about it. They all focused on different aspects of dictionary creation.

Did you know the OED took decades to complete? Many, many decades.

But can any dictionary ever be truly complete.  New words are formed, and old ones eventually slip away to be labelled 'archaic'.  Meanings alter too.

Did you know that in Shakespeare's time the word awful meant awe inspiring, as in full of awe?  In old books there are references to 'the awful dome of St Pauls Cathedral'.

People who write futuristic science fiction stories can often have fun with this kind of thing.  Such as when a talking computer system, which has been on standby for a few thousand years, has to "Adjust my speech and comprehension circuits to allow for the lingual shifts of several hundred years since I last spoke with your species."

I knew about awful. There are other words that shifted from good to bad or bad to good as well. Do you know that I can't think of a single other example at this time?

It's such a shame, this getting older thing. I get too tired and worn out and my brain takes a small vacation without me.

Isn't that what they call Mental Aborigine.

When your mind 'goes walkabout'.

Where is Fly? I know she has, in fact, gone walkabout. Looks like they have a wee wonder with them, getting into all kinds of mischief and smiling in every picture.
