A vastly oversized and overpopulated city, which, as well as having pretentions of grandeur has more than its fair share of unpleasant people, and various noxious substances.  A Toxic City.

London  as a random example, rates high on my personal toxicity scale.

The pretense before tea for us.

Something which can only be understood from inside.  Like some 'insider' jokes.

Good one, Jo.

A key that doesn't require a full turn.

When someone you know is just a bit too weird to claim them as a friend.

The forerunner of a disaster.

As in shoe-horning a one litre motor into a moped frame.  'Now there's a recipe for disaster if ever there was."

Either a small watertight container to keep liquids in, or a large watertight container to keep liquids out.  Either way, it seems a bonus to find a virgin one.  (Life was ever thus...)

In Britain, they talk funny and call pounds quids for no discernible reason. They like them because humans are acquisitive and competitive and having more is always better. So, the act of liking your stack of quids, a la King Midas, is referred to as liquidity.

Being nosy (cf inquisitive) about someone else's stack of quids, possibly with a view to liberating them.

The rate, or speed, at which you liberate someone else's stack of quids, or bearer bonds  if you're a really lucky thief.

Paddington is a bear.  The coastal brown bear of Alaska may be considered a bearer bear, and the polar bear of the far north is the bearest bear of all.  All things are comparative.
