Over here quite a few people won't give money to a beggar with a dog, because they assume he, or she, will only spend it on drink or drugs.

But they will often donate a tin of dog food.  Especially if the dog is a wistful looking little thing with only three legs, plus a cute colourful bandana tied around its neck.

One of our semi-locals scrounges end-of-roll scraps from the fabric shop and colour-co-ordinates with his his dog.  Good practical psychology.

In the years BC (Before Covid) I used to "have" my own beggars. A select few people that I would almost always make time to talk to, and to buy them something they needed. I'd meet them by the supermarket, and would ask if I could buy them anything. They never asked for much. Just small things, like a roll of bread, or a banana.
