See this question mark....
« on: March 04, 2020, 07:39:18 PM »
Does it go here:

has it arrived, they wonder?

Or isn't there one at all?

has it arrived, they wonder.

Because 'they wonder' isn't a question. Whereas a couple of quote marks makes everything OK

'Has it arrived?' they wonder.

But I don't want quote marks. So, where does the question mark go? :)

Shorty.

P.s Grammarly says put one on the end of the sentence.

Grammerly's wrong.  You don't want one at the end of the sentence.  If that's the sentence you want to write, I think you're better without a question-mark at all.

But since you're aware there's a problem with it, I'd be inclined to recast it.  "They wondered if it had arrived." - clear, simple, same information, no doubtful punctuation, no issues.

Thanks, as ever, Jo! I knew Grammarly was not to be trusted! :-)

You're welcome.  Thinking about the small stuff, and trying to get it right, is a mark of maturity in a writer.  Keep it up - I'll help if I can.
