Who can explain what is the main difference between attain and obtain?

Attain is more appropriate when you're talking about reaching a goal - in education, perhaps, sport or just an advanced age - something that has a connotation of winning.  Obtain is just to get, and would usually be used of a concrete item like money or a document, although we also talk about obtaining consent, which is an intangible.  As with so much in our language, it's largely about getting a feel for the words and their usage.
