Drinks all round in the bar. The upgrade worked.
« on: February 13, 2020, 11:00:38 PM »
My machine is now running on Windows 10.  It's quite sprightly.

So far I have only the bare essentials up and running and won't try and make too many changes tonight.

My tame geek said that 'by Gyppo computer standards it was relatively straightforward'.

I would have been screwed trying to do it myself though.

My plethora of drives are all recognised and usable.  Simon urged me to consider installing a solid state drive for start up, which has been on my wish list for a while anyway.  But I'll get used to the system changes first.

But as Shakespeare would say, "All's well that ends well."

It's a bit garish at the moment but I'll work it back down to my more muted settings over the next couple of days.

I've got my old desktop background back, so the girl with green eyes is looking at me whenever I turn it on.

I have about 800 pictures in a folder that cycle through. They are beautiful pictures and I love seeing different things every time I look.

I've had a rolling slide show in the past, with pictures I've taken of Spitfires, and old but relatively pristine motorcycles, plus a few views of favourite/significant places.

The girl with green eyes was shamelessly stolen from a Celtic music site on youtube.  She looks so much the way I imagine my female character Frances to be that she just had to come and live on my computer.  I have no idea if she's famous or anything like that, and I don't really want to know.

My tame geek did all the 'heavy lifting' , but he made sure I didn't get parts I don't want/need.

It boots up so much faster that I don't have time to boil a kettle and make a drink before it lumbers into life.

Agreeably impressed so far, and it's even better now I've tamed the eyeball searing brightness of the initial set up.

 ;D ;D

I hate that brightness, I like to see it but as you say, not sear the eyeballs.

My glasses help with a lot of that glare which is good

I only have laptops, well, a laptop and a Chromebook, and what I like about those is that depending on my eyeballs and their needs, I can just tilt the screens and make the lighting different for those poor little globs of gel.

I use a screen dimmer programme which adjusts the brightness automatically according to the time of day.  Once you've told it where you are.  A postcode is enough for it to work with.  There's an over-ride if you sometimes do colour sensitive work like photo editing, or forging banknotes.

Here's a picture, shamelessly borrowed from a Wikky post on the sublect.  Two images stitched together to show the difference.

It's a free programme and I believe, although I got it elsewhere else a few years back, you can now download it through the windows store.  (Never been there myself).  I tend to do my shopping in the little little corner stores scattered along the Information Super highway.

https://justgetflux.com

It's worth a try, especially if you work odd hours or get headaches from staring into the screen. for too long.

It feels odd at first but once those frowny muscles between your eyebrows start to relax you'll feel the difference.

It's been good to me for the last several years, and it's easy to set up.  Free as well.

It's like an office in our lounge with wife's PC, my PC (both silent-running solid state HDs towers), laptops, printer and scanner all connected wirelessly using Windows 10 - upgraded with no trouble even though the PCs are at least 6 years old. One PC I can change the brightness easily via display settings but not the other. I bothered at this until I realised it wasn't the graphics card differences but the monitors were different models with different setting abilities.
With over a million words for my 11 novels and over 100 published shorts I email them over time to myself and back up when I remember. Just before a holiday I bought a cheap memory stick and copies all my photos, stories, music etc onto it and it didn't even use half the gigabytes available.
The only serious issue looming is that Mrs N has retired and thinking of making our lounge look like a living room, but I've not allowed other people to use my computer. Grandkids and their parents use my wife's and mess it up. Noooo.
